On Tuesday, we went to Digby Neck, which is a series of two islands that start at Digby. There are no bridges between the islands, only ferries. Our first ferry ride took us on to the longer of the two islands, which is appropriately named, "Long Island".
Here is the view from the ferry to Long Island.
What we really wanted to see on Long Island was the Balancing Rock. To get to the rock, we had to take a trail, which is about 1/2 a mile, that goes through a bog, a forest and some 144 steps. These are some of the steps.
The trail ends at the shore, where the columnar basalt is eroding away. The Balancing Rock is one such pillar of basalt. This is the view away from the Balancing Rock.
This is the view of the Balancing Rock.
Further down the road is Brier Island, which we had to take the ferry to. Here is a view of the lighthouse as seen from the ferry. Click on the lighthouse for a closer view taken from Brier Island, the land mass just to its right.
The columnar basalt is ubiquitous on both Long and Brier Islands. Here, we went for a hike around the cove in the background. One the way back, Jeff played hide and seek with Cindy. Click on the rock where Jeff is hiding.
